Eskom is a South African electricity public enterprise, established in 1923 as the Electricity Supply
Commission (ESCOM) by the government of South Africa in terms of the Electricity Act (1922). It is
also know by its Afrikaans name Elektrisiteitsvoorsieningskommissie (EVKOM). The two acronyms
were combined in 1986 and the company is now know as Eskom. The utility is the largest producer of
electricity in Africa, is among the top seven utilities in the world in terms of generation capacity and
among the top nine in terms of sales.

The public utility for electricity in the DRC is called SNEL. It is a public enterprise with an industrial and commercial character. SNEL falls under the leadership of the Ministry of Energy, and the administrative and financial aspects fall under the Ministry’s portfolio. SNEL has been a founding member of the Central African Power Pool (CAPP) since 2004. SNEL is involved in projects such as the Inga power lines to Cabinda, Pointe Noire and the DRC. It has also been involved with UPDEA since 2004 in the creation of the Eastern African Power Pool (EAPP), and plays a role in the Nile Basin project in the Energy Forum. www.snel.cd

The Eastern Africa Power Pool was adopted by Heads of State and Government at the 11th Summit of COMESA in Djibouti in November, 2006 as a specialized institution of COMESA for electrical power for Eastern Africa. The overall objective is to facilitate regional integration and hence to realize sustainable growth and development.
However, specific objectives of EAAP include optimisation of the usage of energy resources available in the COMESA region, increase in the power supply of the region, reduction in electricity production cost and creation of an environment that is conducive for investment. |
