Over 100 participants from over 17 countries attended the conference in Johannesburg on the 28 - 29 July 2009 .

Programme highlights included the keynote address by Terry Moss, the Vice President of the International Hydropower Association and a high-level panel discussion on making hydropower a feasible solution for Africa’s generation needs – focussing on key performance indicators for Grand Inga and Bujagali.

Other highlights included a focus on the Ingula project, the social impacts large dams have on communities, small & micro hydro case examples, trends in dam engineering, new monitoring technologies, an Iceland case study on the Kárahnjúkar Hydroelectric Project and a site visit tour to Bethlehem Hydro, Ingula and Drakensberg Pumped Storage Schemes.
