Energy and water provision under spotlight at iPAD West Africa 2008

Infrastructure Partnerships for African Development West Africa took place from 26-27 November 2008 at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria.

The event included the 5th West African Power Industry Convention (WAPIC), the first West African Water Summit, the iPAD Open Conference and a two-day infrastructure exhibition.

iPAD West Africa was sponsored by CTC, Neptune Technology Group and the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). PHCN was the host utility for WAPIC and the Federal Capital Territory Water Board (FCTW) was the host utility of the West African Water Summit. The Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) was the Secretariat for the event.

Event highlights:

The event opened with a joint keynote session, chaired by Engr Hassan Kida, Senior Sanitary Engineer, The World Bank. Keynote speeches were given by the UNIDO Regional Office for West Africa’s Representative and Head, Mr Masayoshi Matsushita and Engr Simeon Obiora Atakul, Executive Director – Operations, PHCN. This was followed by a panel discussion on Towards a borderless West Africa: constraints and prospects for intra-regional cooperation and trade for the West African power and infrastructure industries.

The official opening of the exhibition took place afterwards. Sixteen local and international companies exhibited and the event saw more than (Number) visitors over two days.

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria hosted the cocktail function on the opening day and CTC and Neptune Technology Group hosted an interactive workshop for the regional and Nigerian water utilities, which was a great success.

The event closed on Thursday, 27 November 2008 with a lively panel discussion chaired by Engr Obassi Etu of the RMRDC.

2009:

The 2nd edition of iPAD West Africa will take place in Accra, Ghana from 17-19 November 2009. iPAD Nigeria is scheduled to take place in February 2010
