Stimulate economic growth - Enhance employability - Accelerate social transformation – Invest in Africa’s most valuable resource

The African continent has averaged 5 percent economic growth over the past five years, and although the future outlook is "bright", skills shortages are one of the main challenges facing the continent. The demand for technical skills is increasingly exeeding supply and Africa faces the ongoing challenge of growing and training its workforce to be globally competitive.

The Technical Skills Africa conference will assist stakeholders involved in the power, mining, ICT and infrastructure industries to develop skills strategies, analyse the cause and effect of skills shortages and show how technical skills can be enhanced in order to meet the demand and supply that is being encountered by these industries.

Event highlights:
  • Pre-conference workshop on talent management – learn how to make a difference to attracting, retaining and developing talent
  • Pre-conference workshop on skills and performance auditing – learn how to link skills and development auditing to overall strategic performance indicators and how to conduct a total performance audit
  • Keynote address: “Reducing the skills deficit to meet the demands of a growing economy” by Honourable Minister Mosibudi Mangena, Department of Science & Technology, South Africa
  • Industry specific case studies – learn from others’ experiences
  • Networking function – engage directly with stakeholders and share ideas and information
  • Panel discussions – gain perspective on the state of the industry and emerging needs

Welcome to the Technical Skills Africa conference 2008!

An insufficient supply of technical skills can constrict private sector development and economic growth.Quality technical training is essential to enhancing economic competitiveness and contributing to social inclusion, employment opportunities, and poverty reduction. The African continent has averaged five percent economic growth over the past five years. While growth is occurring, it is being driven by a handful of economic centres and by small concentrations of skilled workers. The growth that the continent has been experiencing has increased the demand for skills, and this demand is outstripping supply of Africa’s most precious resource - its people.

For this reason Mining Review Africa and ESI Africa magazines are pleased to be hosting the Technical Skills Africa conference, taking place 8 – 10 December 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Technical Skills Africa 2008 conference will assist stakeholders in the power, mining, ICT, and infrastructure sectors in identifying where their skills management strategies can be enhanced. The conference will provide thorough analysis of skills acquisition, development, maintenance and retention, and investigate how public-private partnerships can help to address the current shortfall in skills supply. In addition to the extremely high quality of speakers, it also provides a great networking opportunity.

Anyone seeking solutions to the technical skills deficit should make this event a priority on their calendar.

Yours sincerely
